Yes, a language course can be a residence basis — but use the correct category

A foreigner who genuinely intends to attend a language course in Poland for more than three months may be able to apply for a temporary residence permit for educational purposes. The important detail is the legal category. A normal language course is not treated in the same way as full-time first-cycle, second-cycle, long-cycle master's studies or doctoral-school education.

The Office for Foreigners' MOS guidance places a language course under a temporary residence permit due to 'other circumstances' for the purpose of taking up or continuing education. This distinction matters because applicants sometimes choose the standard study permit simply because the course is organised by a university. The legal nature of the programme, not only the institution's name, determines the appropriate residence path.

Do not confuse a general language course with a preparatory course for studies

A general Polish or other language course is one form of education. A formal preparatory course connected with future full-time university studies can be a different category under immigration rules. Current MOS guidance specifically notes special rules for preparatory courses within the study-permit framework, including a limited route for Belarusian citizens. Applicants from other countries should therefore not assume that a university's 'preparatory' marketing label automatically gives them the standard student residence permit.

Before paying tuition, ask the institution for a precise document stating the programme name, type of education, start and end dates, weekly schedule or intensity, tuition amount and confirmation that the student has been admitted. If the course is intended to support a residence application, the programme should be substantial enough to genuinely justify staying in Poland for more than three months.

Current application route and timing

Wielkopolska's Department for Foreigners states that, following procedural changes effective from 27 April 2026, an application for this educational temporary residence permit should be submitted electronically through the MOS system and no later than the last day of the applicant's legal stay in Poland. Applicants should follow the instructions for their voivodeship and the MOS portal because implementation details and appointment arrangements can evolve.

Electronic filing does not mean the entire procedure happens without personal attendance. Immigration procedures may still require presentation of the travel document, photographs, fingerprints and other original evidence according to the applicable process. Keep proof of submission and monitor official correspondence carefully after filing.

Documents commonly needed for a language-course TRC

The core evidence is the education itself: a certificate or letter confirming admission and participation in the language course. If the course is paid, proof of tuition payment may be required. Applicants should also be ready to document health insurance, accommodation and sufficient financial resources to cover living costs, education and return travel. The official MOS checklist for education permits includes these categories of evidence.

Make the documents consistent. The course dates should match the period requested, the accommodation should cover the intended stay, and the financial evidence should be understandable without unexplained transfers. If documents are issued in another language, check whether a sworn Polish translation is required. The authority can request additional evidence if it needs to confirm that the declared educational purpose is genuine.

How long can the permit be granted and what it does not automatically give you

Current Wielkopolska guidance states that a temporary residence permit for a language course, school or similar educational purpose may be granted for the period of the education but not longer than 12 months. The final period depends on the circumstances and evidence in the individual case. A course lasting only a few months should therefore not be treated as a guaranteed route to a much longer residence card.

Applicants should also avoid assuming that an education-based residence permit automatically provides the same labour-market position as a full-time student residence basis. If you intend to work, check the separate employment rules applicable to your nationality, residence status and job before starting work. Residence permission and work authorisation are related but distinct legal questions.

Who should consider this route and when to get advice

This route is most credible when the language course is genuinely the main reason for staying in Poland: the programme has a clear schedule, the applicant attends regularly, fees and accommodation are documented, and the overall circumstances support the educational purpose. Using a token or low-intensity course only to create a residence basis can create problems if the authority concludes that the declared purpose does not justify the stay.

Auranik's TRC Consulting service can help applicants organise the MOS application, course documents, insurance, accommodation and financial evidence, and identify which residence category appears to fit the declared purpose.
