What is the difference between a visa and a residence permit in Poland?

People keep using "visa" and "residence permit" like they mean the same thing. Are they?

## Short answer
No, they're not the same. A national visa (D visa) is issued by a Polish consul abroad and covers entry and stays over 90 days, up to a combined maximum validity of 1 year. A temporary residence permit is issued in Poland itself, by the competent voivode, and is generally needed for an intended stay over 3 months, valid up to 3 years.

## What this depends on
Which one applies to you depends on where you are and how long you intend to stay. If you're outside Poland and need to travel there for a longer stay, a D visa is often the entry route. Once your circumstances change (e.g. you take up longer-term work, marry, or study), you typically need to apply for a residence permit from within Poland.

## Important exception
These are two different authorities and two different legal regimes -- a visa question should generally be directed to the issuing consulate, and a residence-permit question to the competent voivodeship office. Don't assume advice about one automatically applies to the other.
