I keep seeing "KRS" mentioned for Polish companies. What is it?

## Short answer
KRS (Krajowy Rejestr Sądowy, the National Court Register) is the official register that companies, partnerships, and other organized entities must be entered into. A sp. z o.o. legally comes into existence upon KRS registration -- before that, it exists only as a "company in organization."

## Documents / steps
Registration is submitted electronically, either through the Portal Rejestrów Sądowych (standard route) or the S24 system (simplified, template-based, typically faster). Upon KRS registration, the company automatically receives its NIP (tax identification number) and REGON (statistical number) -- you don't apply for those separately.
