SPOUSE OF A POLISH CITIZEN
Temporary residence as the spouse of a Polish citizen
What the marriage certificate needs to satisfy, how the office assesses genuineness, and the full preparation checklist for this route.

The route
A foreigner married to a Polish citizen may apply for temporary residence on that basis. Alongside the general requirements (income, health insurance, accommodation), the marriage certificate itself has its own conditions: office practice commonly expects a copy issued no earlier than 90 days before submission, and a sworn Polish translation if it isn’t already in Polish.

The office assesses whether the marriage is genuine
The office handling a spouse-of-Polish-citizen temporary residence application is required to assess whether the marriage was concluded to circumvent the Act on Foreigners (a sham-marriage check), not merely to confirm the certificate is genuine.
Be ready to support the application with evidence beyond the certificate itself -- joint life, correspondence, photos, and similar evidence of a genuine relationship.
Check your marriage certificate first
Before preparing your file, check whether your specific certificate needs an apostille or legalisation, whether it needs a Polish sworn translation, and whether it’s still within the freshness window.
